New NBC Sitcom Is Racially Offensive

Dear NBC:

I have seen the previews for your new show "Whoopi" and find it to be very offensive.  I will not be tuning and and I doubt many other Americans will be as well.  In times like these today, with heightened tensions and racial sensitivity, this show only seeks to further stereotypes and ethnic divisions.  As a white person, I am offended by several referrences on your show that are culturally insensitive.  In one instance, Whoopi yells at her Iranian employee to "stop scaring the white people".  In the second instance, you cast a white girl as a character who tries to act as if she were black and is treated with disdain by Whoopi.  Whoopi also indicates that she is about to react violently towards this character.  That is not socially acceptable in this country.  We won't even delve into the issues surrounding your Iranian character and his anger towards white guests and subsequent violent attitude.

What is the point of this show?  To illustrate the ethnic and racial divides within this country and to further stereotypes?  I am offended by this and I do not feel that Whoopi Goldberg should be given a pass on this where if this were a white comic, that comic would be branded as a racist and would be considered racially insensitive.  Just look at the outcry over Trent Lott's comments at Strom Thurmond's birthday party as proof of this.

I feel you should reconsider this sitcom.  It is not funny and is not needed in light of the issues this country is dealing with.

A smart and sassy new comedy that lets Whoopi be Whoopi!

Grammy Winner. Emmy Winner. Oscar Winner. Oscar Hostess. And now headliner of her own NBC comedy. Whoopi Goldberg stars as Mavis Rae, a proud, opinionated lady who owns and runs her own small, downtown New York hotel. Keeping things lively around the place are Mavis' older brother Courtney, Iranian handy man Nasim and Courtney's girlfriend Rita. But the real star of this hotel is Whoopi as Mavis, who keeps the zingers flying with her unique brand of topical humor. Just what you'd hope for from the producers who have so expertly tailored TV comedy roles for the likes of Roseanne, Brett Butler and Bill Cosby. Now is the time and this is the role for America to celebrate anew the brash, bold and unabashedly funny Whoopi Goldberg in all her glory.
